Atlanta R&B vocalist Monica debuted in 1995 with the platinum Top Ten singles “Don’t Take It Personal (Just One of Dem Days)” and “Before You Walk Out of My Life.” After appearing on LL Cool J’s Mr. Smith later that year, she recorded another killer duet with Brandy, “The Boy Is Mine,” which spent several weeks at the top of the singles charts during summer 1998. Her second album, also titled The Boy Is Mine, was released in July 1998. She scored a few more chart successes through the following spring, but a long period of silence marked time between albums. The much-delayed After the Storm finally hit stores in the spring of 2003 and reached the top of the Billboard 200, while the following Makings of Me took three years to materialize and hardly suffered for it, reaching the Top Ten. Still Standing, released in 2010, was preceded by a BET reality series of the same name, which debuted the previous October. It was her second consecutive number one R&B album, and her fourth consecutive Top Ten Billboard 200 release. She followed that success in 2012 with New Life which featured her re-pairing with Brandy on the single “It All Belongs to Me.”
Collie Buddz follows a string of successful one-off singles and collaborations with a new reggae soul classic “BLUE DREAMZ” and “Like Yuh Miss Me,” a sexed-up banger that’ll make you wish summer was sticking around for another few months.
His first project since 2012’s Playback, Blue Dreamz once again proves his incomparable talent for blending ol’-school riddims with modern sounds.
Buddz delivers his timeless approach to reggae and dancehall as he celebrates the finer things in life throughout the seven tracks. Women, weed, and friends, they’re all essential to the Bermuda native’s party. He drives that home on the appropriately titled “Go Hard,” no doubt a crowd pleaser during his seemingly endless tour schedule. A true road warrior, Buddz has spent the past few years supporting the likes of Cypress Hill, Rebelution, and Matisyahu.
Even when tackling more serious themes, Buddz finds a way to keep it chill. That’s apparent on “Pressure,” a vibes-filled tune highlighting the world’s addiction to texting and social media. And it sits comfortably next to a mid-afternoon joint like, “Sweet Wine” and the legalize-it anthem, “Prescription.” This is all a testament to Buddz’ artistry, something we’ve all known since the release of his acclaimed 2007 debut, Come Around, and its luminous title track.
Blue Dreamz is out now on Louder Than Life/Sony Music. And if you’re in NYC tonight, you can catch Buddz at Hot 97’s On Da Reggae & Soca Tip tonight in NYC. Also, be sure to keep an eye out for soon-coming videos for “Like Yuh Miss Me” and “Blue Dreamz.”
(Tour Period: from 19th of November until 6th of December)
