Mixtape of the Year: Rich Gang “Tha Tour Part 1”

Birdman knows what’s up. He’s always at least ten steps ahead of everybody else in terms of creativity, business, and style. Once again, he ushers in the future with Rich Gang’s revolutionary mixtape, Tha Tour Part 1. The union of Young Thug and Rich Homie Quan stands out as one of hip-hop’s most exciting ever. As far as teams go, these two have the potential to be regarded in the same breath as OutKast or The Hot Boys. Tha Tour Part 1 blesses us with 20 tracks featuring the two and punctuated by Birdman. It’s a focused, fiery, and fascinating ride that’s as wild as it is wonderful.

From the moment Birdman introduces “Givenchy”, the mixtape exudes an otherworldly elegance. It captivates with Thug’s inimitable delivery and Quan’s robust flows. “I Know” balances a strangely soulful hook with impressive bars, while “Beat It Up” goes undeniably hard. A resounding piano kicks off the sizzling “Flava” where Thug once again asserts his genius, managing to sound unlike absolutely anybody else on this planet or any other for that matter.

“730” ticks through more charismatic and catchy posturing while the finger snaps and synths can’t even bolt down the woozy, intoxicating ecstasy of “Tell Em (Lies)”—especially once Thugger breaks it down.

Quan proves the perfect foil. He’s got a gruff cadence that’s undeniably his own, and it truly shines during “Bullet” and “Freestyle”. Together, they cook up one banger after another, stirring all of them into a bona fide classic. These gentlemen are the future, and this is the year’s best mixtape. Just wait for the album. 2015 will belong to Rich Gang.
